S. lineoa

(African Mantis) S. lineola, S. viridis, S. centralis

Sphodromantis lineola, also known as the African Mantis, is a VERY easy mantid species to keep. In fact, all sphodromantis sp. are easy. This makes them excellent for beginners. I myself keep them because they are one of my favorite species. They are very aggressive and actually go after their prey instead of sitting around waiting for food to come to it.

I have kept this species for years and it was actually one of my first non-native species. The males are pretty skittish, but the females are just… wow. I often see them capture the food I drop into their containers before it even hits the ground.

My experience with breeding them has been great as well. They are an easy species to breed given that the female has been well fed and you wait at least 2-3 weeks before introducing the male. Cannibalism while trying to mate has been pretty low, however whenever I leave a male in there, he gets eaten shortly after finishing. Once the deed is done he goes from friend to food, so stay close if you want to keep him alive.
